First Line Friday 5.19.17

Happy Friday again!! Yesterday, I worked on the first stages of moving into a new bedroom. For the first time, I was able to pull out all of the books I've acquired the past three years and have them all in one place! Yeah...I counted up to 350 books (oh wait...I did forget about those that I was lending to friends).

Which are now, mostly, temporarily shelved. My daddy built me a bookcase (these are closet shelves here) and once the glue dries, the books are in their new home! :)

I pulled together the books I've not yet read... *insert scared emoji*

Approximately 130 books! :/ I could read solid a month and not catch up! This pile just may take me years. Have you read any of these books?

And then I counted up the most books from one author... Janette Oke wins!

Last but not least, I had a little fun with my current book infatuations: Civil War and medieval.

Okay, okay, so FIRST LINE FRIDAY! Yeah, took me long enough! ;P I'll be honest, perusing through all of those books, I didn't stop long enough to find a first line. So I thought I'd change the rules. *gasp* ;) Today, you can choose the first line. See any of my books that you'd like to know the first line for? Just comment and I'll try my hardest to reply this weekend! I have a graduation I'm pianist at so my time isn't all free.

And while you're at it...why not share a first line from your bookshelf?

You have an insane amount of books! :)

Here’s my first line:
Garvin Poole slipped out of bed, got his lighter off the fireplace mantel, and walked in his underwear through the dark house to the kitchen, where he took a joint out of a sugar jar, then continued to the garden door. ~Golden Prey by John Sandford

I love your book collection. In your not read book pile, Horseback Riding for Dummies looks interesting. I'm sure you have a story to go with why you have that book. I have to say I used to own all of Janette Oak's books, I lost them and hundreds of other books to a broken water pipe and the idiot clean up crew that came. They tossed 3 overly filled bookcases out in the snow instead of saving the books that did not get wet.
Here's my first line.
A shiver rippled across Juanita Hoyt’s shoulders, an involuntary spasm induced by the cold metal encircling her wrists.

I recognise many of those books on medieval life! However I don't know the one about medieval weapons and armour, so I'd love the first line from that one.

I have the first line from Erynn Newman's debut release 'Out of Darkness' on my blog, but here I'm going to share the first line from Johnnie Alexander's latest release, 'What Hope Remembers':

"The June sun beat on Gabe Kendall's bare head and tapped into his childhood memories of the horse farm."

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday! Haha! I also have so many bookshelves, and they are OVER full!!
My first line is: “My heart beat as if it was trying to build up speed and erupt from my chest.” From Warfare:Life After Book 2 by Julie Hall. Coming out June 13th.

Oh, it's just so fun seeing all those books! Love it!

My first line is from TURTLES IN THE ROAD, a humorous romance from mother/daughter duo Rhonda Rhea and Kaley Rhea. The book arrived yesterday, and I didn't get to crack it open until 1:00 AM...but I just HAD to start it before bed! The first chapter is hilarious...and Piper is my new BF! -- "Normally a nice long solo drive had a calming effect on Piper."

Awesome book collection! Janette Oke was one of my favorite authors growing up...you have to check out the Love Comes Softly film series on the Hallmark channel. :) As far as first lines go, Medieval Warrior sounds interesting.

My books are in tubs.

It's a Regency weekend for me. Today I've started reading Carrie Turansky's Edwardian Brides series.

HAPPY FRIDAY and HAPPY READING!

@ Dinh - Ah yes...I've had fun collecting them. ;) We've got some thrift stores down here that always have a good selection of Christian Fiction. :) I don't know that I've ever paid full-price for a book!
That quote brings up a lot of questions! :)

Amanda Tero said...

@ Andrea - Horseback Riding...yes. :) I'm a writer, so anything that crosses anything I am writing about, I grab. This one was a quarter at a thrift store. And though I've ridden horses, it's not enough to where I'm positive I can accurately describe it. So, hence the book. :) Research. ;) That is so sad about your destroyed books. :/ Thanks for sharing your FL!

@ Fiction - ah, the medieval weapons! That was one I saw at Books a Million then found cheaper on Amazon cause I so wanted it!!

First line of Introduction:
"The common image of medieval warfare is one of armoured noblemen clashing on horseback while a mob of miserable peasant infantry cower nearby. The contribution of longbowmen is often acknowledged, but the focus is firmly on the knightly host as they determine the fate of kingdoms. This image is hardly surprising."

Amanda Tero said...

@ Becky - yeah...overfull bookshelves is where I am now. ;) I finally got them all on a bookshelf today...and need another bookshelf. ;)
Nice first line!

Amanda Tero said...

@ Karen - thanks! :) It is fun to see them all out! It's the first time I've ever done that between moving and changing rooms the past three years.
Sounds like an interesting book!! :) Thanks for sharing.

@ English Mysteries - it's been at least two years since I've read Oke. Part of me is a little "scared" to because I've learned so much about writing since then. I want to still love them. ;) I've seen most of the Hallmark movies. The books are better (of course), but I do enjoy the movies too. :) See above for the quote from the medieval warrior book.

Amanda Tero said...

@ Caryl - most of mine were until yesterday. :) Ah, Regency! I've only read a handful of those. :)

Wow. I feel for you. We've moved five times in six years! 2017 is our first year not moving. Already debating our need to move in 2018. Most of my books are in storage, but here's a line from mine:

Jody Hedlund's For Love & Honor: "You have one month to pay the debt," Captain Foxe stated, his tone as rigid as the plate armor he wore.

This is the book I have just started to read; Mrs. Odboddy: Undercover Courier. By Elaine Faber ” Lighting flashed and thunder rattled the windows of Wilkey’s Market where Agnes pushed a little metal cart through the crowded aisle.”
But I do have another great mystery up today on the blog!

You mean I'm not the only person who has tons of books and double ps up on their bookshelf. Love it!!

Great collection! I thought I’d share something different here than the book featured on my blog today. This book is one my son is reading.
“Betsey Maxwell wearily trailed behind Loren as her brother dodged the muddy puddles, horse manure, and piles of crates in the narrow London street.”

Hi! I just went through all my books to reorganize them, though they're still in totes. It's fun, isn't it? It makes me almost feel like I've just read them again. =) On your haven't read stack, I've read "In My Father's House" (really good further insight into the person Corrie ten Boom was), Big Red (I think I remember that in the stack. One of my favorite dog books growing up. Couple of swear words, but the relationship between Ross and Danny is pretty good =), and The Witch of Blackbird Pond (writing style for that I'd like to study--I haven't read it for years, but I still have some scenes clearly in my mind!).
First Line? How about the Lauren K. Litter book (Hidden Treasure and Wedding Bells, I think). Some of the books in your TBR stack are in mine too. =)

Here's my first line, taken from my to read list: "From the time I first put on wooden shoes--*klompen* we call them in Holland--I dreamed of derring-do."

--God's Smuggler (Brother Andrew)

Thanks for the Friday entertainment!

Goodness, you're stocked!! It's at that point that I would get a little overwhelmed :D

Could I see the first line of A Question of Honor? And who is Founding Rivals by?

I hope you have a wonderful Lord's Day!

@ Andie - it's fun to have Christian classics like that. :)

Amanda Tero said...

@ C.J. - and I feel for you. :P When I was young, we moved almost systematically once every two years, just by God leading my dad to different churches and ministries. We got spoiled at staying at the last house for seventeen years.

Amanda Tero said...

@ Bree - ooh, mysteries!! Sounds exciting!

Amanda Tero said...

@ Jessica - haha!! Nope, not the only one. ;)

Amanda Tero said...

@ Trisha - another Trailblazers! Thanks for sharing. :)

Amanda Tero said...

@ Liberty - it is fun! Except having NOT read 130 of my books, it just made me want to spend the rest of the month only reading. ;) (which, of course, I cannot do). I've read other books by Corrie ten Boom, so look forward to one day reading that one. And "Big Red" and "Witch of Blackbird Pond" are two I really want to get around to reading. Especially the latter. My younger sister read it twice in a row. ;)

First line from "Hidden Treasures"...
"Amy opened her eyes and looked around the room in confusion, squinting against the bright sunlight streaming in the window."

Ah! Loved reading "Brother Andrew!"

Amanda Tero said...

@ Jewels - yeah...the TBR pile is a little overwhelming, but I've mixed them up with all my other books so now they're not glaring at me. ;)

First line of "A Question of Honor" (which I really want to read soon!)
"Joyanna Shein glanced at her parents. She knew there was something wrong...there had been something wrong for days."
Ah! I want to read it! My sisters loved it. :)

And "Founding Rivals" is by Chris DeRose.
