Let His glory shine through you, bringing His light to the world. Within these pages you'll learn to unlock your natural beauty that God has given you.

My Review
This is a short and easy book to read (I read it while getting distracted from editing a book ;)), but I enjoyed every minute of it. Amanda covers a lot of ground in a few short words--from accepting the body God has made you in to embracing the role of womanhood.

Not only does Amanda cover Biblical reasons for modesty, she gives some very practical insight in how to change one's wardrobe. The simplify chapter was very organized and had a great list of questions to determine what to keep or get rid of.

A quote that stood out to me:
"[Wearing dresses] has become a wonderful daily reminder of the thought and hard work God put into making me who I am: a woman."

*I received a complimentary copy of this book to read*

Therefore now flee thou to thy place: I thought to promote thee unto great honour; but, lo, the LORD hath kept thee back from honour.

Obeying God may cost us earthly promotion, but nothing can compare to the spiritual peace and blessing that comes from steadfast obedience.

The Solid Rock | Blog Tour

TSR Release Banner FB and Blog

I am excited to be part of this blog tour for a new Christian Western! Faith Blum joins us today to talk about her new release, The Solid Rock. It is about a talented detective with a mission to find his kidnapped colleague who finds himself working undercover with a heinous outlaw who has more plans than first meet the eye. I had the chance to read this book as a beta reader, and it sure is exciting!

About the Book

3D The Solid RockJoshua woke with a quiet groan. As his senses woke up one at a time, he cracked his eyelids open. Sure enough, there was a silhouetted form standing at the foot of the bed. From the smell, the person was either from the brothel down the street or had recently left one. He forced himself to breathe evenly and reached for the knife in his thigh holster. With as tough and evil a voice as he could imitate, he spoke, “State your intentions.” Pinkerton detective, Joshua Brookings, is sent on a job that seems simple on the surface. His fellow detective has been kidnapped and his boss, William Pinkerton senses foul play. Joshua is sent to investigate Edward's case in hopes of finding the kidnapped detective and helping solve the case that has taken over ten years to investigate. Arriving in Cheyenne, Joshua finds much more than a simple kidnapping. Yet again, he must go undercover, something he made his boss promise never to make him do again. The only Christian in the outlaw group, Joshua falters and almost loses faith in God’s providence. Will he stand on the solid Rock or drown in the sinking sand?

Biblically Speaking - Ways of Men (vs. God's way)

Part 20 in my study on what is abomination in the sight of God.

Recap:
Many believers have fallen into accepting that which is abomination in the sight of God. Unless we study God's Word to learn His Mind on what is abominable, how will we know to purge ourselves from abomination? Lord willing, I will be posting the fruits of my study on the word "abomination," but feel free to leap ahead of me and study it for yourself. What is an abomination to God?

Ways of Men (contrary to ways of God)
Luke 16:15 - And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

In context, this verse follows Luke 16:13-14, No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him.

The Pharisees had their list of rules of "right and wrong" however Jesus reminded them that God's ways are higher than man's ways. We can refuse to listen, but that does not change God's laws and His ways.

Shapes and Swirls | Graphics Design

Last week, I pushed all of my fonts on you. This week, I'm going to introduce something that I have SO MUCH FUN with! Some are under the category of "Dingbat," others are just swirls and designs. All of them plug into your fonts on your computer.

Some of the dingbats/swirls I have on my computer and use often are Kfon, Nymphette, WW Floral Corner.

For example, here is the banner I created for Orphan Journeys:

You can see it on the top of Journey to Love.

Compare the new Orphan Journeys series banner to my former thought (which was...no banner).

How did I create the new and improved? Let me introduce you to my favorite "font," Nymphette. I probably overuse it, I like it so much!

First, I kept "Orphan Journeys" in the font Cinzel. Then, using good ol' font Times New Romans I placed a line on top and on bottom of my text (yeah, I could have just drawn a line, but this is just how I do things the hard way).

THEN, the fun part! I used Nymphette letters KL (capital, yes) to create the double swirl. Then, I copied those, flipped them horizontally, and here ya go.

It is simple, but adds so much! Here are a couple of other designs in which I've used Nymphette to embellish:

What do you use to embellish your work?

Do you have a link to something you've designed? Share it in a comment--I'd love to stop by and see it!

A Dream Not Imagined | Book Review

I read A Dream Not Imagined a few months ago...but it is one of those sweet reads that I highly recommend and, as I had an empty "book review" slot, decided that it's a great option to fill in for today.

About the Book
A Maid, a Prince, and a Duke. A Gardener, a Stepmother, and a secret...

Ellie Abbington, a beautiful yet unassuming young woman, quietly longs for her life to change. Too privileged to associate with the servants—too underprivileged to associate with her own family; she dreams a dream of a prince and a happily ever after.

But it could be that her own stepsisters, conniving Dezmarie and easily-influenced Adelaide, are dreaming the same dream...of the same prince.

In the end, are dreams even all they're made out to be? Especially with deep and long-hidden secrets about to be unearthed?

A Dream Not Imagined is a non-magical fairytale novella based loosely on the classic tale of Cinderella.

My Review
I thought this was such a sweet, innocent story. For a Cinderella retelling, there were a couple of surprising plot twists which I thoroughly enjoyed. In a way, it kept me guessing, but at the same time, I could still figure out what would LIKELY happen. There was a sense of mystery with Lady Abbington's actions--and I did figure out what that mystery was a little bit before it was spilled. ;)

All in all, I really enjoyed this book. It wasn't overly romantic. In fact, I don't even think they kissed--"the man" (which you'll have to read to discover who HE is ;)), just kissed her forehead, from what I remembered.

I greatly appreciated the concept portrayed in this book--which this quote does so well in summing up:
“There comes a time,” Lottie went on gently, “when we need to stop and let God write our love stories. In that moment, something will happen; you’ll stop ruining your life.” She chuckled softly, then went on with steady eyes, “And a dream will come true. A dream you’ve not imagined.”

Word Wednesday #99

And the LORD said unto Moses, Is the LORD'S hand waxed short? thou shalt see now whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not.
Numbers 11:23

The Lord's hand is not slack--but it must be according to His promises. We must be careful to not guarantee that God will do something that He has not promised in His Word. He is able to do the impossible, but that is according to His promises--not ours.

Biblically Speaking - Prayers of the Rebellious

Part 19 in my study on what is abomination in the sight of God.

The Prayers of Rebellious
Proverbs 28:9 - He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.

This goes along with Psalm 66:18, If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me: We cannot live however we please and expect God to hear our prayers. 1 Peter 3:12 guarantees, For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. God, being the just and holy Savior that He is, cannot mar His purity by looking on and condoning our sin. One cannot rebel against the Lord and expect Him to hear our prayer.

Font Craze! | Graphics Design

Part of the fun of graphics designing is playing around with different fonts. Your computer will not have the explosion of fonts that you need to be creative. It just won't. And Times New Romans won't get you much of anywhere.

Here is a list of the fonts that I have on my computer. And honestly, it's a really small list for a graphics designer. I'm getting there slowly.
A couple of things you want to watch for before cramming your computer with thousands of fonts. If you're designing things to sell, you need to be sure that you're getting commercial free fonts. This is why I have a list--so that when I need a font, I can look to make sure I'm using a free font (and not just grabbing one from my computer which may be intended for personal use only). Secondly, beware of where you're downloading them. You can get viruses on your computer by downloading anything from just anywhere online. I use fontspace.com. I'm not saying that you can't get viruses from them, but so far, I've not had a problem.

Here's a list of the fonts you see above if you want to copy and paste in the search option.

Room for Hope | Book Review

Some books just have a happy, cozy feel to them. That was totally the case for me with Room for Hope. Ms. Sawyer tackled a tough case with the Shillings--unfaithfulness, adoption, forgiveness, thievery, rejection, acceptance, and trust. Wow, so much skillfully portrayed in one book!

Ms. Sawyer had a very good balance with the romance in this novel (for my preference). The theme of the story was definitely more about family and their trials than one finding their "happily ever after." I can honestly say that I enjoyed practically every minute of reading this book.

I did find it a little strange with the pastor and his visions--it was just a hint of strangeness.

Younger readers might want not want to read this book because of the very circumstance that threads the story together. Ms. Sawyer was very discreet as she dealt with the dad's unfaithfulness, and even in occasions when someone called the children a vile name, she never wrote what the word was.

Beautiful quote from there:
"I can't look at year's and weeks. I have to look at souls and sales. What would God have me view as the most valued?"

*I received this book from Blogging for Books in exchange for my honest review*

About the Book
In a desperate time, can Neva find forgiveness for a grievous wrong—and make room for hope?

Neva Shilling has a heavy load of responsibility while her husband travels to neighboring communities and sells items from his wagon. In his absence, she faithfully runs the Shilling Mercantile, working to keep their business strong as the Depression takes its toll, and caring for their twins.

When a wagon pulls up after supper, Neva and her children rush out—and into the presence of the deputy driving a wagon carrying three young children. The deputy shocks her with the news that Warren and his wife have died, insisting it was their last request that the three children go live with “Aunt Neva.”

Neva’s heart is shattered as she realizes that Warren’s month-long travels were excuses for visits with his secret family. She wants nothing more than to forget Warren, but can she abandon these innocent children to an orphanage? Yet if she takes them in, will she ever be able to see them as more than evidence of her husband’s betrayal and love them the way God does?

Word Wednesday #98

Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
Romans 8:12-13

It's easy to read verse 12 and say, "Now I don't need to live after the flesh" then by the flesh try to accomplish it. The key is in verse 13: we must conquer the flesh through the Spirit.

Scripture Memory - the Process

Last week, I mentioned the three pillars for the foundation of memorizing Scripture.

This week, I'm eager to share some of the things that help me memorize Scripture.

Read
Read the Scripture 10 times out loud.

Memorize Portions
Break up the verse into phrases and work on one phrase at a time.

Repeat and Repeat
Whether its a full verse or portions, say it over and over. I usually say a portion fifteen times. Then, I'll say the next portion fifteen times. Then those two portions together fifteen times.

Pattern of Six
My sister recently discovered that saying six words together (even if they do not create a full phrase) helps induce memory.

Memorize While Working
Copy the verse on an index card or prop up your phone with the Scripture verse on it where you're working. Instead of letting your mind idly wander, purposefully memorize Scripture.

Place in Easily Seen Places
Copy the verse onto index cards and put it out in areas that you frequent. Each time you see it, say it.

Sing it
Create a song to sing for your verse.

Put it to rhythm
Instead of saying the verse in monotone, accent some words, say some words faster, some slower. (No, I'm not saying create a rap out of your Scripture verses...but if that helps... ;))

First Letters
Write down just the first letters of the verse and say it using only the first letters as your aid (John 3:16 would begin, "F G S L T W...").

As You Go to Sleep
Those minutes when your mind is winding down? Quote your verse.

When You Wake Up
And...those minutes when you're groggily trying to convince your body to get out of bed, quote your verse.

Listen to It
Either record yourself or listen to an audio Bible of the verse(s) you are memorizing.

Have an Accountability Partner
A friend and I were discussing the trouble we were having with faithfully memorizing God's Word, so we decided to keep each other accountable. Sometimes, she'll text as soon as I pick up a book to read and I have that reminder, "Have you worked on memory yet today?" Amazing how God works out the timing like that!

What are some ways you've found helpful in memorizing Scripture?

It's Here!

Journey to Love is now ready for you! Find it on Amazon!

About the Book
Now orphaned, Marie is swept miles away from the only life she knew to be sheltered by unknown guardians. Caught in the challenges of a new life, she cannot prevent changes from happening, but she can keep the Bowles and their friends at arm's length. Or can she?
While things appear to transition smoothly on the outside, Marie struggles against the turmoil she faces on the inside. She sees something in the Bowles and her new friends that she had never experienced before...but should she trust what the preacher is teaching when it goes against everything she had accepted as truth? Is God really a God of love? If He is, then is Marie willing to accept it?
Follow Marie as she begins the journey to love.

About the Series
Imagine yourself as an orphan, struggling for survival on the filthy New York streets, where disease and crime run rampant. Journey from these wretched streets to a temporary lodging in an overcrowded orphanage and then to the train station. After riding the train for hours, picture yourself lining up with other children, waiting as adults look you over. Would you be chosen—or would you have to hold onto the hope that maybe, at the next station, someone would want to bring you home? Minister Charles Loring Brace had a vision for New York orphans that brought them through this journey from streets to homes. He began his orphan work in 1853, then in 1854, because of lack of orphanage space, Brace sent the first orphans, by train, to Dowagiac, Michigan, where the children could be sheltered by local families. The "orphan train" continued until 1929, bringing at least 150,000 children to new homes where they were fostered and, occasionally, adopted. Brace desired to place children in good, Protestant homes. Many orphans experienced Brace's desire, but some orphans had different stories: siblings were separated, and some couples took orphans to use for cheap labor. Though many orphans ended up as successful men and women, not all of them turned out to be trustworthy citizens. Orphan Journeys is a fictional novella series based on the American Orphan Train saga. Each story follows orphans not only as they adjust to a new life, but also as they embark upon a spiritual journey.

Posing Problems | Photography

When I started to seriously photograph people, I got on Pinterest (since then, I have found its usefulness for writers as well). There are tons of cute posing ideas on Pinterest! But I quickly found two problems with it: 1) I am not good at replicating a shot (not do I want to mimic someone else), 2) Not all subjects pose like Pinterest pins.

I discovered both of these points when experimenting with my sister. I loved some cute hand-poses. It did not take long to see that those poses just did not look like my sister's normal self. It was forced. Unnatural. So then we did some things with her hands that she always does and you know what? Those pictures captured her personality splendidly! "Read" your subject. Ask them if a pose feels comfortable. Get them to pose themselves--"Just sit next to the wall"--and see how they naturally set themselves. You may need to tweak their pose a little, but try to capture their pictures--not shaping them to a Pinterest idea mold.

 From my Camera Bag:
(or my card ;))
Here are the pictures of my sister that I ended up taking.

The Solid Rock | Cover Reveal, Giveaway, and Interview

You've seen Faith Blum on my blog before, and here she is again! :) I was privileged to read The Solid Rock as a beta reader and it sure is full of excitement! Do you want to see the cover? Oh wait...you must gather all fifteen clues first!

About the Book
Joshua woke with a quiet groan.

With as tough and evil a voice as he could imitate, he spoke, “State your intentions.”

Pinkerton detective, Joshua Brookings, is sent on a job that seems simple on the surface.

About the Author
PictureFaith Blum started writing at an early age. She started even before she could read! She even thought she could write better than Dr. Seuss. (The picture doesn't show it well, but there are scribblings on the page of Green Eggs and Ham). Now that she's grown up a little more, she knows she will probably never reach the success of Dr. Seuss, but that doesn't stop her from trying.

When she isn't writing, Faith enjoys doing many right-brained activities such as reading, crafting, writing, playing piano, and playing games with her family. One of her dreams is to visit Castle City, Montana someday to see the ghost town she chose for her characters to live in. She currently lives on a hobby farm with her family in Wisconsin.

Clues
In order to gain access to the blog page that has the full cover on it, you need to hop over to the __ other blogs to gather the clues. Interview
Me: How long have you known that "The Solid Rock" would be a part of the Hymns of the West series?
Faith: This is a great question! I haven’t always know the title or the exact plot of The Solid Rock, but the first inklings of the idea came when one of my beta-readers for A Mighty Fortress asked if there would be a sequel. My immediate response was, “I wasn’t planning on one.” But then my brain started working and I came up with an idea that Joshua, the main character in both books, becomes a Pinkerton detective and solves some sort of crime. Then I got ideas for the other three books and the timeline worked best to put this book off for last.

Me: What lesson do you most hope and pray readers will be able to learn from "The Solid Rock?"
Faith: No matter what is happening in your life, or how far away God seems, God is always with you and will always be there for you to lean on if you’ll just let Him be your rock and foundation.
Faith: It’s kind of nice and kind of strange at the same time. I’m sad to leave the characters, but I’m also excited about the next series I’m working on. And since the next series will have some of the characters from the Hymns of the West series, I’m not completely leaving them behind. I’m looking forward to where God leads me next.
