Word Wednesday #29

"And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins." 1 Peter 4:8

Fervent charity. Even when others speak evil of us (verse 4). Even when others judge us (verses 5-6).

  1. Thanks for sharing this verse, Amanda! Amen! It is only because of fervent charity that we can walk that higher road when others judge us or speak evil of us.

" And Aaron shall bear the names of the children of Israel in the breastplate of judgment upon his heart, when he goeth in unto the holy place, for a memorial before the Lord continually.
And thou shalt put in the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim; and they shall be upon Aaron's heart, when he goeth in before the Lord: and Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel upon his heart before the Lord continually."
    Exodus 28:29-30

    "But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us."
    Hebrews 9:11-12

Recently I've been reading through Exodus in my Bible reading and have been amazed to rediscover the striking similarities between the Old and New Testament. What the Old Testament saints saw in shadows and part, but now we see in the light and in whole. The meticulous detail that God took in commanding Moses suddenly takes on a awesome beauty when we realize that even the very garments of the high priest was to be a foreshadowing of the Eternal High Priest. Only a God who knows the end from the beginning could have done this!

  2. Hey Amanda,
Thanks for the verse, and thanks for the reminder below it of what was in the preceding verses. Wow, that's definitely something to think about. It's easy to love the people we are friends with, get along with, or that do things for us, but probably not something we think about as much when we've been wronged, etc.

The passage I'm going to include is a little lengthy, but I could hardly find a stopping place from one verse to the next.

    Galatians 3:6-18
Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.
And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.
So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.
For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto.
Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.
For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

I love this passage because it shows so clearly that salvation is by faith alone and works can do nothing for us. Especially the verse that says the law was not given until 430 years after the promise was made to Abraham, and he was justified by faith. This is such an amazing doctrine of the Bible, and yet it couldn't be any other way, because if it were based on our works, no one would be worthy of Heaven.

    Blessed and thankful,
    ~Janell

  3. @ Kenzi,

Hebrews and the Old Testament!! :) What a beautiful comparison of Christ fully satisfying the law! It is truly awesome to see the detail in which God gave His commands and saw them completed in His Son Christ Jesus. Thank you for sharing one of these - I enjoyed reading it!

    By God's grace,
    Amanda

  4. @ Janell,

I agree...God has sprinkled so many verses in there for us about REAL life - and not for when things are just rosy.

But to your verses. :) Amen! I love the whole book of Galatians because of God's emphasis on salvation NOT by works. Faith is an amazing thing!

As a side-note, I thought it great how both of you (Kenzi and Janell) had passages about the law and Jesus Christ. :)
