Word Wednesdays #10

"And now, Lord, what wait I for?
my hope is in Thee."
(Psalm 39:7)

"Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man,
in whom there is no help.
His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth;
in that very day his thoughts perish.
Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help,
whose hope is in the Lord his God:"
(Psalm 146:3-5)

If only we could grasp these verses: my happiness comes by hoping in God. But how often am I hoping, waiting, and expecting to find happiness in something (or someone) else?

  1. Thank you for these verses, Amanda! Psalm 39:7 especially stood out to me...may our hope during seasons of waiting always be in the Lord!

"O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day. Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts. I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word. I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me. How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!" Psalm 119:97-103

We'll never be able to comprehended the treasure depths of the law of God. By it we find wisdom and understanding, and learn to hate every evil way. How much do I desire the Word? Does its sweetness draw me to meditate on it all the day?

  2. Wow! Those are wonderful verses, Amanda; thank you so much for sharing!! That's so very true: our happiness comes from hoping in God. And ouch on the last part - about the someone. ;)

Last night during some struggles, the Lord gave me this verse:

"But I trusted in thee, O Lord: my times are in thy hand. Deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me." - Psalm 31:14-15

My times are in Thy hand.

    Praise His Name!!!

    Love you!

  3. @Kenzi -

Thank you for sharing! Psalm 119 is probably one of my favorite chapters in the Bible; I especially love how it challenges us about our passion for God's Word. It is easy to say, "I love God's Word" but I think that the next phrase reveals that those words are true: "it is my meditation all the day." If we love God's Word, we will be drawn to it and desire to read it, memorize it, study it, and think upon it -- I also believe that it would ever be present on our lips. Oh, may the Lord help me to grow more and more in my desire for His Word!

  4. @Patience -

I think we all need continual reminders of where our true happiness comes from. It is so, so easy to get distracted with temporal pleasures that I think I lose the joy of eternal pleasures. I have found that a challenge even this week. When I start to get a little discontent, I suddenly realize that I've gotten my focus off God and His Word in some way.

Oh, "Tis so Sweet to Trust in Jesus!" I love verses on trust (and that song has been sung or played at least four times this week at revival :)).

  5. Great verses Amanda!
    2 Thessalonians 1:11-12
"11 To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power,
12 so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ."

  6. Sarah,

Thanks for your comment and for sharing Scripture! What an encouraging passage! It reminds me of a verse that I read this morning, "Ye also helping together by prayer for us," (2 Corinthians 1:11a) Oh the benefits and blessings of being able to pray one for another and help each other in that manner!

Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer. (Psalm 19:14)
